The heart of leadership: marriage, family and spirituality

By Farai Makopa

Apostle Joy Museba’s three-day ‘Pastors and Leadership Total Commitment 2024’ seminar was nothing short of transformative for all who attended. Hosted at the New Creation Life Ministries International Church headquarters in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe from December 28 to 30, one of the powerful seminar sessions centered on marriage, delivering a crucial wake-up call to all leaders and clergymen present.

Apostle Joy delved into the often-overlooked area of leaders’ marital issues and their ripple effects on society. He presented a spiritual prescription aimed at fostering healthier relationships and, by extension, a healthier society. This exploration highlights the urgent need to address personal challenges at the leadership level to ensure a stable and thriving community.

The man of God made it abundantly clear that leaders lacking a healthy intimate life pose a significant risk to society. He emphasized that intimacy is not just a personal matter, but a cornerstone of strong family bonds, imploring everyone, “Do not neglect your intimacy!” His message pushed for open discussions about intimacy and the differing verbal communication styles between men and women. He reinforced the awareness that “Your wife is your partner,” a fundamental truth that all leaders should embrace.

The seminar took a fascinating turn when he introduced the ‘Evil Kindness’ concept. This was a powerful moment, as he warned against ‘well-meaning’ individuals who attempt to intervene in couples’ lives as if they have the expertise to resolve serious issues. These self-styled relationship saviours may appear harmless, but they can wreak havoc in the lives of others. Apostle Joy further urged leaders grappling with marital difficulties to actively seek help, whether through medical or spiritual avenues. He encouraged a realistic acknowledgement of personal weaknesses while refining individual strengths. Highlighting the importance of clear boundaries, he cautioned against undefined relationships, reminding attendees that, as outlined in the Book of Amos 3 verse 3 (NLT), “Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?” Intentionality in relationships is critical; the company we keep must align with our values and goals. One must not pitch their tent near Sodom, figuratively speaking, lest they risk being influenced by its corrupt and destructive environment, and instead, choose to surround themselves with people and environments that uplift and support their spiritual growth.

He reinforced the necessity of cultivating strong marriages and relationships, emphasizing that God detests divorce and that commitment in marriage is invaluable. He quoted Proverbs 18 verse 22 (KJV), affirming that “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.”

As the conference concluded, Apostle Joy prophesied a new era of refined leadership emerging in 2025 and beyond—one characterized by leaders dedicated to building robust marriages and relationships, unmotivated by selfish ambition but rather by a sincere desire to uplift others.

The Total Commitment 2024 conference served as a crucial call to action, urging leaders and pastors to elevate their character and leadership. Through Apostle Joy’s compelling insights and prophetic messages, attendees emerged with a renewed commitment to strengthen their marriages and relationships. The atmosphere brimmed with introspection and hope for the future, beautifully encapsulated in Hebrews 13:4: “Marriage should be honoured by all…” Apostle Joy’s teaching was the perfect amalgamation of humour, wisdom, and practical advice – left an indelible mark on all participants.
